HISTORY
Rosalie Massey is a con artist and street magician who goes by the name Shorty (an ironic childhood nickname as she is tall). Shorty had been running street cons for years before eventually discovering the fact she could do actual magic. Despite being able to perform magic she still prefers to rely on her own skills to run her cons only using magic in certain situations
She is especially skilled at the three card monte and pickpocketing. Shorty has a preference for short cons, though has occasionally joined a crew in order to run a long con.
As a child Shorty's mother seemingly vanished and Shorty spent most of her life believing her mother had abandoned them. Her father, also a con artist, would often take her and her older brother along with him while he was performing the three card monte. While her brother showed little interest in running cons, Shorty was fascinated. Her father soon noticed she had a knack for the cards and he began to teach her. He eventually taught her how to pickpockets. when he eventually got a gang together for long cons he would often take Shorty with him.
Despite taking her on cons her father insisted that she go to school. On the day she was to graduate from high school her father was arrested. While her brother went to university and eventually became one of the highest-ranking lawyers in the city, Shorty took the streets and began to run her own cons. She had a falling out with her brother and spent some time homeless because of it. She stole in order to survive, targeting houses and apartments belonging to wealthy New Yorkers. It was on one of these nights that she discovered she could actually use magic when she was almost caught - during a fight she managed to somehow create a portal which transported her to a nearby alley. Confused and scared at first she wanted nothing to do with it, eventually, she tried to learn what she could.
While not close with her brother, who doesn't approve of her lifestyle (as she's never had what he would call a real and honest job), she is very close to his three children often dropping in to surprise them. Her nieces and nephew have no idea of what she really
Ten years after his incarceration her father became incredibly sick. Shorty went to visit him and he revealed that her mother hadn't left them. That she had vanished and someone was responsible for it. He died before being able to tell her mother. While her brother believes this was the rantings of someone who "wasn't really there," Shorty believed him. This revelation has caused her to seek out answers to her magic, believing it could help her find her mother.
